EVANS IS STEVE ROGERS

As if there were not already enough eagerly anticipated superhero films being released this year, Joe Johnston director of Captain America: The First Avenger sang his praises for another one of Marvel’s greatest. The film which will be released on July 22nd 2011 sees Fantastic Four star, Chris Evans step into the boots of one of the most renowned characters in comic world history, Captain America.

The director who has award winning films such as Jurassic Park and Jumanji to his name had nothing but praise for main star Chris Evans. On working with Evans, Johnston said: “I didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away by the subtlety that he brought to the role.  It was really exciting to watch him. He added layers to the character that were not on the page and layers that were not in the comic books. He made Steve Rogers into a real flesh-and-blood character and it was fantastic to watch.”

The speculation as to whether or not Evans will pull off the huge role was somewhat debatable, with some fans fearing that his presentation of Captain America will be overpowered by the sarcastic and witty traits that became so fitting for the Human Torch. Fans want more action than comedy considering it is a superhero film, and Johnston’s reassuring comments appear to confirm this. “Seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there are great visual effects.  The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare — it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it. You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva lot of fun to watch.” For the sake of the Captain America’s value as a comic book superhero, I hope this is not just Johnston blowing his own trumpet.
