WONDERWOMAN GAINS JUSTICE

An interesting topic of debate arose this week as a result of script writer David E Kelley announcing that the eagerly awaited Wonder Woman TV series would no longer be going ahead. This news came after reports on January 8th from Entertainment Weekly which stated that the Wonder Woman project was being passed on. When it seemed like the birth of the Wonder Woman TV series was all but gone, NBC made a surprising revelation today when it was announced that they had picked up the show. The proposed show had been passed on by the likes of Fox and ABC, with CW claiming they were in no state to afford it.

In spite of the show dedicated to Wonder Woman now going ahead, is it fair to question whether or not producers and directors take more caution when it comes down to superheroines? Just think of all the most successful superhero films and TV series – Batman, Superman, Iron Man, Spider Man. There is one thing in which each of these famous characters share. That’s right, it’s the fact that they are all male.

Believably, the reason behind such concern when it comes down to producing a film or TV series with a female as the main character, could possibly be due to how unsuccessful it has proven to be in previous years. Take Catwoman and Supergirl for example. It is fair to say that both of these films portrayed the superheroines in a dismal light, even going so far as saying they were embarrassments to the comic book world. However considering Wonder Woman is possibly the most significant and recognisable female comic book character ever created, it is a wonder as to why nobody has ever attempted to launch this female character onto the big screen until now.
